The tutorial also shows how to turn the log cake and owl into a fantastic graduation cake, complete with scroll and mortarboard hat!

For the Log Cake and Board
cake (8 inch round, minimum depth 4 inches)
1kg - brown sugarpaste
2kg - white sugarpaste
750g - buttercream*


For the Owl Cake
cake (6 x 4 x 7 inch high sponge cakes)
1kg - light brown sugarpaste
750g - mid brown flowerpaste
55g - caramel flowerpaste
10g - black flowerpaste
55g - white flowerpaste
750g - buttercream*


Colours
dust colours: chocolate brown, lime green, burgundy, black
gel colours - brown, holly green,red
isopropyl alcohol for painting

8 inch thin cake board

large serrated knife
large palette knife

vegetable shortening (Trex, Crisco or cocoa butter)

any 8.5cm and 6.5cm daisy cutters

1cm round cutter
no3 piping nozzle
modelling / veining tool (Jem)

cocktail sticks
water pot and brush
dusting sheet (laminated paper works well)
kitchen roll
No6 paint brush
card, pen and scissors for templates
1 metre brown ribbon
double sided sticky tape
paint palette with round apertures

Fairy Sparkles - Iced white or similar.
small sieve (to make the stamens)
small stiff brush (for graduation cake grass)
0.5 metre thin ribbon (for graduation scroll)
2½ inch styro ball (for mortar board)
45g - black flowerpaste (for mortar board)

*To Make Buttercream
125g butter (at room temperature)
1 tbsp milk or water
375g of icing sugar
Beat the butter until light and fluffy
Add icing sugar, milk and flavouring
Continue to beat until pale and fluffy, scraping down the bowl half way through mixing.
